Somehow, we managed to get Mom up the stairs and onto the futon. She was in a state that I’ve never witnessed before. Sadie got her a glass of water and had Mom taking deep breaths.

Matt called in his team to make their investigation yet again. Perhaps this time we could discover how the body delivery person was making his rounds. Seriously now I am getting scared.

“Mom. Who is Ernestine?” I ventured.

Between sobs Mom uttered something I understood – hairdresser. Oh so that’s who she is – but why is she here? And what does she have to do with the John Doe we are already hosting?

I went into the office Mom and Nick once shared and dug into the desk drawer. Nick was a hoarder when it came to calendars. I pulled out last years that had Mom’s name on it. She would have had her hair done before any major event – say her birthday.

Bingo! There it is ‘Clip Joint – 3:00 pm.” That sounds like a salon to me. Only one way to find out. Matt and I discussed the pros and cons of my going in to investigate. He wasn’t convinced, neither was Sadie.

I persuaded him that I would only take photos, ask a few questions as the daughter of a client, and be low key on any subject concerning our dead lady in the freezer. Finally Matt agreed but only if I shared anything that I found.

The nice receptionist said I could come in tomorrow afternoon. Perfect. Maybe Mom would be over hyperventilating by then.
